Project Description
There are almost 3,000 miles of public rights of way in Dorset: 4,700 footpaths, 1,700 bridleways and 37 byways. The Greenspace Team East are looking for volunteers to become part of an expanding network of enthusiastic individuals, who take responsibility for maintaining our rights of way and conservation sites.
Ideally we’re looking for people who are able to offer a half day or full day (preferably a Tuesday) on a regular basis during the week, to help us maintain the Rights of Way network in East Dorset. This is a large area, and we’re a small team! We use a system called C-Side which allows us to receive complaints and queries from the general public regarding issues such as overgrowing vegetation, broken stiles, obstructions, barbed wire where it shouldn’t be etc. We’d be asking volunteers to join us one day a week to go out on site and help us deal with these problems, mainly removing vegetation. Most of the work would involve using hand tools to remove brambles and bracken from paths, and any overhanging vegetation that’s causing an obstruction. We would supply gloves, tools and training.

Please contact us at the email provided. For those who volunteer regularly additional advanced training may be made available in the use of power tools and first aid. Long term we’re hoping to have trained up a team of volunteers who are happy and able to go out alone and deal with minor works. We’d provide the map, gloves, tools and transport (from the Workbase at Avon Heath), or if nearer and more convenient, we’d ask the volunteers to go direct to site. We will not be expecting any volunteers to carry out any enforcement work, but as you’ll be representing Dorset County Council we will be asking each volunteer to sign a mutually agreeable Memorandum of Understanding.
